About Us: We are a small, home based company committed to producing healthful products for your skin. As a physician, I saw many patients with dry, flaky skin, often with allergies to commerical products. When a nurse suggested that I learn to make hand crafted soap, I jumped at the opportunity. I make hand crafted soaps using the cold process method. My soaps are all tested on family members. The family consists of myself, , a daughter, Mandy, and our African daughter, Anne. We brought Anne over from Malawi, Africa in 1994 as an exchange student and she has become a member of our family. Her skin needs are somewhat different than ours, and we have developed a soap specifically for her African skin.
About Our Products: We make soaps using the cold process method. Soap has been used for hundreds of years, and we use the same essential ingredients that have been used all these years: fats, oils, and lye. In our basic recipe, we use lard for the 'fat' (makes a hard but gentle bar of soap with moderate lather), soybean for the oil (light, readily absorbed, rich in fatty acids and Vitamin E), coconut oil for lathering and nourishing, and commerical sodium hydroxide for the lye (instead of the wood ashes from 'Grandma's lye soap'). To this basic recipe we add a variety of other ingredients. We use nourishing oils (castor, almond, olive, kukui, macadamia, etc.), herbs (in various forms, including infusions), butters (shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, etc.), essential oils, and assorted other goodies. Some bars are just for fun: pretty colors and fragrances. Some are geared to certain seasons as great gift giving ideas. Others contain ingredients to give them specific qualities (scrubbing, gentle, nourishing, etc.). The Silk 'N' Soaps contain ONLY natural ingredients: they are great for the purist in the family! We also make other products: lotion bars, lotions, bath salts, milk baths, lip balms, bath bags, sweet pillows, and buckwheat hull pillows. Most of these are custom made at the time of a customer request.
